Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary and Thol Lake are situated in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, which is the country’s fifth-largest state. The lake was formed artificially by the Gaikwad government.

About Thol Lake Sanctuary

Thol Lake is home to a well-known Thol wildlife sanctuary, which attracts dozens of birds of various types. The sanctuary includes a modest water body built specifically for birds. Many migrating birds frequent this reserve to nest and breed in the water. Flamingoes and Sarus Cranes are two noteworthy bird species that are quite uncommon elsewhere.

Aside from birds, mammals such as bluebull, striped hyena, wolves, golden jackal, and blackbuck live in this refuge. One of the great features of this lake is that it is surrounded by marshy vegetation. Aside from that, many various types of flowers and prickly plants may be found here.

Thol Lake Sanctuary Ahmedabad History

Considering the history of Thol Lake, it may be said that the Gaekwad management intentionally built this freshwater reservoir in 1912. India was experiencing a serious water problem at the time. Therefore, to supply water for agriculture, the ministers or authorities of the time constructed this reservoir. At the moment, the Gujarati government’s departments of irrigation and forests are in charge of maintaining and managing the lake.

According to the Environment (Protection) Act 1986, Thole Lake Bird Sanctuary was declared an environmentally sensitive area.  The lake is currently maintained and controlled by the Forest and Irrigation Department of the Government of Gujarat.

Flora And Fauna Thol Lake Sanctuary Ahmedabad

Flora:- The Sanctuary has a variety of species, including Acacia nilotica, which grows and floats in these marshes, in addition to the tree that is often seen surrounding it. Azadiracta indica, Ficus sp., Prosopis chilensis, Leukoploia, Giziphas, and Caprisparis are a few of the numerous floating aquatic plants. According to research by Normal Biological Spectrum (NBS), the Bio-Geographiczone-IV region has a variety of aquatic plants as well as prickly shrubs and drought-resistant plants.

Fauna:- Trekkers and visitors alike adore Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary. The year-round Camping and Trekking Program is managed by the Sanctuary Authority. A day trip to this lake, especially if you love the outdoors, can lift your spirits like nothing else.

Numerous bird species, including flamingos, purple swamphens, spoonbills, bulbuls, green shrinks, herons, sunbirds, sandpipers, ibis, peacocks, and many more, can be seen in this refuge.

This area is home to many mammals and animals, including foxes, zebras, jackals, and others, in addition to birds. You can speak with locals to learn more about the sanctuary’s wildlife. By Road
The Thol Lake Sanctuary is well connected to the state’s largest towns in Gujarat, including Gandhinagar (23 km), Vadodara (105 km), and Rajkot (225 km).

By Train
The nearest Railway station is Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur), which is around (32km) from Thol Lake Sanctuary.

By Air
Ahmedabad Airport is located at a distance of approximately (34 km) from Thol Lake Sanctuary and it takes about one hour to reach.
