About Barton Library
The oldest library of Bhavnagar, Barton library was founded during the 19th century. The library is a depiction of the chronological and cultural importance of Gujarat and Bhavnagar. Placed in the heart of the city, it is a must-visit tourist place in Bhavnagar city for all age groups. The library has been named after, the chief British representative, Colonel Barton, and consists of manuscripts that are written in different languages. It is believed that the library was often visited by Mahatma Gandhi for readings. Due to the same reason, Barton library is a favorite haunt for historians. The library was won the Best Librarian award for offering services to the society for ages.
Barton Library History
The history of the establishment of the Barton Library is associated with the Chhagan Prasad Desai Library. It was the first initiation towards the establishment of an institute in the Kathiawad region.
To satisfy the hunger of reading of Bhavnagar, late diwan Gaurishankar Oza established “Shri Chhaganbhai Desai Library” in C.E. 1860. This library was a small drop to later create the ripples of “Barton Library”.
How old exactly is Barton Library?
The answer is 150 years. 30th December 1882 is said to be its date of establishment. On 30th December 1882, it was inaugurated by King Takhtsinhji Gohil and he named the library after English political agent Colonel L. C. Barton. This organization is closely linked with the Chhagan Prasad library and has a special designation on the map of Gujarat’s great culture. Academicians, researchers, and intellectuals think of this organization as the treasure of information.
Thousands of Gujarati books on various subjects are an integral part of the library. The history of the state is incomplete without Barton Library and book lovers in Gujarat eagerly want this library to emerge as the best of the country. The huge building of now Majiraj Kanyashala near corporation in Navapara was initially the Barton Library in C.E. 1882. Mahatma Gandhi was among its regular readers.

બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલય એ શહેરના સૌથી પ્રાચીન પુસ્તકાલયોમાંનું એક છે, જેણે રાજ્યમાં ખૂબ નામના મેળવી છે.
ભાવનગરની બાર્ટન લાઈબ્રેરી એ ગુજરાતની સૌથી જુની લાઈબ્રેરી છે. તમને શુ લાગે છે તેના કેટલા વર્ષ થયા હશે ?

બીજો આંકડો જ સાચો ૧૫૦ વર્ષ. ૩૦ ડિસેમ્બર ઈ. સ. ૧૮૮૨ એ તેનો સ્થાપના દિવસ ગણાય છે.
બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલયનો ઈતિહાસ
ઈ.સ. ૧૮૮૨ની ૩૦મી ડિસેમ્બરે ઉદ્ઘઘાટક મહારાજા તખ્તસિંહજી દ્વારા તે સમયના ભાવનગર રજવાડાના અંગ્રેજી પોલીટીકલ એજન્ટ કર્નલ એલ.સી. બાર્ટન ના નામે આ પુસ્તકાલય નામકરણ પામ્યું હતું. ઈ.સ. ૧૮૮૨માં નવાપરા ખાતે કાવેરી કોર્પોરેશન નજીક હાલ જે મોટી માજીરાજ ક્ન્યશાલાનું મુખ્ય મકાન તરીકે ઓળખાય છે તે બાર્ટન લાઈબ્રેરી ત્યારે હતી. અને તેમાં મહાત્મા ગાંધીજીએ પણ નિયમિત વાચક તરીકે લાભ લીધો હતો. ઈ.સ. ૧૮૮૨માં છગન પ્રસાદ દેસાઇ એ ૫૦૦૦ પુસ્તકોનુ દાન કર્યુ હતુ.
બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલય ની વિશેષતાઓ
બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલયની મુખ્ય વિશેષતા એ છે કે તે દરેક વર્ગના વ્યક્તિઓના વાંચનની ભૂખ સંતોષે છે જેમાં નાના બાળકોથી લઈને યુવાનો તેમજ વડીલોનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલય ૮૮,૦૦૦ થી પણ વધુ પુસ્તકોનો સંગ્રહ ધરાવે છે કે જેમાં ગુજરાતી, હિન્દી, અંગ્રજી, સંસ્કૃત , મરાઠી તેમજ કેટલીક હસ્તપ્રત પુસ્તકોનો પણ સમાવેશ થાય છે. સભ્યોને પુસ્તકાલયમાં જોડાવા માટે નજીવી રકમ ચૂકવવી પડે છે. બાર્ટન લાઈબ્રેરીમા હસ્તપ્રત પુસ્તકો, નવલકથાઓ, પવિત્ર ગ્રંથો, હાસ્ય પુસ્તકો, વાર્તા પુસ્તકો વગેરે નો સંગ્રહ છે.
બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલય માં “ગુજરાત નો નાથ”, “મધ્યબિંદુ” જેવી પ્રખ્યાત નવલકથાઓનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. પુસ્તકાલયમાં પવિત્ર ગ્રંથો જેવા કે શ્રીમદ્ ભગવદ્ ગીતા, રામાયણ, મહાભારત, બાઈબલ, કુરાન વિગેરેનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. પુસ્તકાલય કેટલાક કાર્ટુનના પરિકલ્પના ધરાવતા પુસ્તકો પણ ધરાવે છે કે જે બાળકોનું ધ્યાન પોતાના તરફ ખેંચે છે. બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલયમાં ખુબજ રસપ્રદ એવા ‘અકબર બીરબલ’, ‘પંચતંત્ર ની વાર્તાઓ’, ‘વિક્રમ વેતાલ’, ‘બકોર પટેલની વાર્તા’ વિગેરે જેવા અસંખ્ય પુસ્તકોનો સમાવેશ થાય છે.
બાર્ટન લાઇબ્રેરી પુન : સ્થાપિત
રાજ્યનો ઇતિહાસ બાર્ટન લાઇબ્રેરી વિના અધૂરો છે અને ગુજરાતમાં પુસ્તકપ્રેમીઓ આ સંસ્થાને ભારતની સર્વશ્રેષ્ઠ રૂપે ઉભરીને જોવાની રાહમાં છે. બાર્ટનને સૌરાષ્ટ્રની પ્રજા માટે પ્રતિષ્ઠિત સ્વરૂપે પુન : સ્થાપિત કરવાનું ધ્યેય હજુ ઘણું દૂર છે. કારણકે આ પ્રયત્ન માટે સારા એવા ભંડોળની જરૂર છે. બાર્ટન પુસ્તકાલયને સમૃદ્ધ કરવા અપૂરતી આર્થિક સહાય સતાવી રહી છે.
