Mata No Madh or Ashapura Maa temple is located in the village of Lakhpat Taluka in the Kutch district of Gujarat. The village is about 110 kilometers from Bhuj. Ashapura Maa, an incarnation of Annapoorna Devi, is well-known among her devotees for fulfilling the desires and wishes of those who pray to her in times of need. Many other communities in Gujarat revere her as a Kuldevi.

About Mata No Madh

The village is surrounded by hills and has a temple dedicated to Ashapura Maa on both banks of a small stream.

It is an important temple in the Kutch region and one of the most popular places to visit as part of the Kutch Package.

People from various communities flock to the temples all year for her ‘darshan,’, especially during the ‘Chaitra,’ and in greater numbers during the ‘ashvin’ Navratri. During the festival, Puja is performed on a large scale, and everyone from former rulers to locals actively participates.

Mata Na Madh History

Ajo and Anagor, two Karad Vanias (Gujarati Caste), built the Ashapura Maa temple in the 14th century. They were ministers in the father’s court of Lakho phulani. The 1819 earthquake damaged the temple. Sundarji Shivji and Mehta Vallabhaji, two Brahmakshatriya, rebuilt the Ashapura Maa temple in 1823. The temple was destroyed again in the 2001 earthquake, but it was rebuilt.

Architecture of Mata No Madh

Mata no Madh is a good illustration of traditional Indian architecture with elaborate and intricate carvings. The image of Ashapura Mata in the shrine is a red-painted stone, about six feet high and six feet broad at the base, narrowing to a point in shape, with some rough likeness to a human form. The unique thing about the idol of Ashapura Mata is that it has 7 pairs of eyes. As the name indicates, she is the Goddess who fulfills the wish & desires of all those who trust and believe her. One can also see a considerable bell presented by Mian Ghulam Shah Kalhoro of Sindh and deep mala weighing 2 kg silver offered by Jamadar Fateh Muhammad on the temple premises.
