Blackbuck National Park is a national park in India located at Velavadar in the Bhavnagar District of Gujarat.

Located in the Bhal region of Saurashtra, the park was established in 1976 and is roughly 45 kilometers away from Bhavnagar, the official headquarters of the district. The Maharaja of the princely kingdom of Bhavnagar mostly used the 34.08 km2 area as a “vidi” (grassland) to hunt blackbucks with his renowned hunting cheetahs. To the south, it follows the Gulf of Khambhat’s beaches. On its northern boundary, it is surrounded by meadows and wastelands. The national park is located in the 4B Gujarat-Rajwada biotic province, which is part of the semi-arid biogeographical zone.

The Alang River is the favorite protection for wolves and defines the Park’s southern boundary. It is thought that the sea gave origin to the rich soils. The Gulf of Khambhat’s mudflats are its high tide zones, with floods frequently occurring in the lower portion.

Blackbuck National Park History

The sanctuary was first created as an 18 square kilometer protected area in July 1976. The area was expanded by 16 square kilometers in 1980, making it 34 square kilometers. Even though it’s one of the less well-known national parks in the nation, a wide variety of creatures call it home.

Flora and Fauna At Blackbuck National Park

There are about 140 bird species, 14 mammal species, 95 kinds of flowering plants, and a large number of reptiles in the park.

In Hindu mythology, the Blackbuck is highly adored. In Gujarati, it’s referred to locally as Kaliyar. Krishna Sara, Krishna Mruga, and Saranga are their Sanskrit names.

At a small marsh in the south of the park, pelicans, flamingos, ducks, waders, coots, painted storks, white storks, sarus cranes, and other species congregate. The Park is home to common and demoiselle cranes, as well as a variety of raptors like steppe and spotted eagles.

This is a singular National Park featuring mudflats, shrublands, saline plains, and a distinct grassland environment. There are almost a thousand blackbucks in Velavadar’s wide grasslands.

The park is open most of the year but is officially closed from June 15 to October 15 during the monsoon season.
